MacConkey Agar with Levofloxacin-16 (MAC w/Lev-16) is a selective and differential medium used for the detection and isolation of Gram-negative enteric bacilli. Escherichia coli can ferment lactose to produce acid which results in a pH drop. This is indicated by neutral red resulting in pink colonies. Increased acid production results in the precipitation of bile salts, or a halo, around lactose fermenting bacteria. Lecithin neutralizes quaternary ammonium compounds while Polysorbate 80 neutralizes phenolic disinfectants, allowing more accurate recovery of viable microorganisms from sanitized surfaces. This formulation is widely used in environmental monitoring programs, sterility assurance testing, and GMP regulated laboratories. Plates are sterile, pre poured, and ready for laboratory use.
